What it's all about...
Luther Heights seeks to…
- Awaken and nurture the faith of those it serves within the context of a worshiping community.
- Offer experience in an intensive Christian community, so campers may be sustained in the covenant of their baptism—finding affirmation in that community as a child of God and drawn more deeply into the lives of others.
- Foster Christian formation, through teaching the biblical story, sharing one’s faith, helping people discern God’s will for their life and modeling Christian character.
- Develop in each camper an appreciation for the natural environment and a sense of gratitude and responsibility for the whole of God’s creation.
Many Challenges
As Luther Heights moves forward into its second half century of ministry, we face numerous challenges. These challenges include concerns and shortcomings regarding health and safety, food service, program space and increasing customer expectations—including a desire for nicer facilities, those which effectively serve an aging population and persons with disabilities.
Specific Needs
Food Service and Dining
- New kitchen space for food preparation. In 1988, 8,600 meals were served. In 2010, 18,500 meals were served. We hope to expand to accommodate current as well as future needs.
- Food storage (dry goods as well as refrigeration).
- Additional dish washing space.
- Additional Dining Hall and Meeting Room space for large groups.
Housing
- Additional housing to comfortably accommodate adult guests and staff (privacy and bathrooms).
Health and Safety
- Additional bathrooms in the existing lodge.
- The Health Center needs more adequate bed space and privacy.
Program Space
- The fastest growing Luther Heights programs are those for adults and families.
- Additional meeting space is needed—particularly when two or more programs are running concurrently.
- Responding to the needs and requests of parents to be able to bring their multiple-aged children to camp at one time, Luther Heights offers concurrent programs for different age groups. During inclement weather, the camp lacks separate meeting spaces for different age groups.
- For our youngest campers (6-10 years of age) the lack of a bathroom in the cabins is difficult.
Marketability
- Outside groups, combined, provide 39% of our total fee income ($74,700). They have asked for improved meeting space, additional number of meeting spaces and more accommodations with bathrooms.
How will the New Lodge Enhance Luther Heights Ministry?
The New Lodge will…
- Enable Luther Heights to conduct ministry better, safer and more efficiently.
- Increase our weekly capacity from 124 to 168.
- Be more welcoming for Family Camps, Retreats and Women’s Retreats.
- Be a more attractive and inviting for outside groups.
- Enable multiple programs to run concurrently.
- Improve our overall ministry of hospitality.
Now is the Time!
